NASCAR Stories

I wake up very tired and cold, stomach is upset, just a day I’m not feeling very good at all. So after staying in bed for about 2 or 3 more hours, I get up and make some hot green tea with honey, my go to cure all drink. I figure I’m not doing much today, so I turn on the T.V. looking for something to occupy my mind all day. I wasn’t feeling like a movie or series, then I remember a few sports documentaries on Peacock that I have come across before. So I turn on that streaming channel/app, whatever you want to call it!

About a week ago or so, while on Peacock, I found this show called “Coffee with Kyle”. It’s Kyle Petty interviewing different NASCAR personalities and legends, in various coffee shops. I like NASCAR and loved these interviews with drivers like his dad Richard Petty, Ned and Dale Jarret, Tony Stewart, Bobby and Donnie Allison, along with son and grandson of Wendell Scott. Just some great stories and good people. They all enjoyed this time together and you can just see and feel the respect Kyle has for them and also the respect they have for Kyle.

Kyle does a great job of taking us on a trip of NASCAR history, as seen through the of everyone he talks to. People like Ken Squire, Doug Yates, Mike Helton, Richard Childress, Roger Penske and Jack Roush. It’s a great show, very fun, entertaining and sometimes sad. My favorite episode is probably the one with the Allison brothers. Bobby and Donnie have some very entertaining stories, growing up and racing.

The Allison brothers are known as the Alabama Gang, along with Red Farmer, these 3 are the original gang, with Neil Bonnett joining later. Bobby and Donnie’s first trip to Alabama (they were born and raised in Miami, Florida area) was in the late 1950’s to Birmingham. They only had one race car, it was Bobby’s car, he was older by 2 years. Bobby ran pretty good, he placed 5th in the first heat, 5th in the semifinals and 5th in the feature race. After the races are over Bobby tells Donnie, I’ll go up to the pay window and get our couple of bucks, grab some burgers and we can sleep in the truck, on our way to Montgomery. Bobby goes up to the pay window and they hand him $135.00, Bobby says ” Donnie, we have died and gone to heaven, look at all this money!”

Many more cool and funny stories with these two brothers, and many more through out all the interviews. Definitely a must watch for all racing fans. There are some sad and emotional moments, while talking about the deaths of other drivers, Kyle’s son Adam and Bobby’s sons Clifford and Davey. It’s a show that takes you into the highs and lows of all of their lives.

Another good show for race fans, also on Peacock, ” Lost Speedways with Dale Earnhardt Jr.” They walk through old abandoned race tracks, a couple of tracks have been repurposed, and tell the stories of these tracks and drivers.

Thanks for stopping by, feel free to leave comments, or even share with your family and friends. Catch you on the flip flop!
